1983 Porsche 944

Description: I haven't owned this Porsche for very long. I bought it from a doctor in Georgia and drove close to 1000 miles home to Springfield MO. It handle better than most new cars I've driven.
The mileage was claimed to be around 37,000 original miles. I was a little skeptical, but the doctor did have a dealership in Jacksonville Florida check it out mechanically and they said they found no reason to suggest it had any more miles than what it says. I also have a clean carfax on it that goes back to 1997. The car currently has right under 39,000 miles on it. After driving it a while I'm confident in its mileage because either these things run like new forever or this genuinely has around 38-39,000 miles.
I have not had a problem with the car yet. Everything works good, except the antennae doesn't go up and the parking brake will not stay up. I was told the antennae might be because the installer of the alpine cd player it has might of forgot to connect the remote accessories wire or the antennae might need to be replaced. The parking brake is my fault, its on the door side of the driver seat and I sat on it when I was getting in once. The metal piece that holds the brake against the gear rotated back and needs to be rotated. I haven't had time to mess with it and I never park on hills so it works fine for me to just put it in gear.
The car is a very sound car and more reliable than most cars I've ever owned. My family car is a mercury sable and the transmission on that went out so I need to sell my Porsche. I told my wife "maybe the Porsche could be our family car for now"... then I tried fitting a car seat in the back... not gonna happen.
The car has an iPod compatible alpine cd player, new hood and hatch supports, has been converted to a more modern AC system (which honestly blows way too cold on high), and it has a removable sunroof.
I always keep it garaged when I'm not driving it and the doctor before me did the same. There are a couple of small fades on the bumper. Ones probably the size of a half dollar and the other a quarter.
I took it to an auction and a couple of dealers were offering me 5,000 and I turned them down. They just wanted to turn a profit and I would rather sell it to an enthusiast. Another dealer told me I was smart to turn them down because "I could get $12,000 in the right market for that quality of a car". Turns out that "market" cost $500 to sell at and you have to schedule months in advance. I need to fix the transmission on my mercury now and that isn't going to work for me.

I am the original owner. I bought this car new in April 1984. Have driven it very little in the past six years, and we finally decided it was time to pass it on to someone else. This would be a wonderful project car for refurbishing. It has a sound structure, strong engine and good transmission. Most of what does not work is likely electrical, and is probably caused by mouse-chewed wires.
I have all of the purchase and maintenance records, including the original sales brochure, window sticker, original sales contract and all correspondence with the dealer (Carlsen Porsche Audi in Palo Alto, CA). I also have a copy of the May 1984 Road & Track Magazine which listed this car as the Best Sports GT of 1984, and which led me to make the purchase. I have the original black vinyl bra and a custom tan flannel car cover and canvas seat covers. All of this goes with the car if you want it.
The Pros:
body is in good shape, with only a few minor dings
The wheels and tires are in good condition
The engine is strong and runs very well
transmission is smooth, except as noted below
All exterior lights work except one back-up light
headlights open and close
All interior lights, dash lights and gauges work fine
Wipers front and back work, but the rear wiper needs a new blade
The radio (Alpine model 7164 with cassette player) works, but since the antenna lifter does not work, you cannot receive many clear channels.
Both electric side windows operate fine and smoothly open and close
air conditioner blows, but the Freon has not been charged in many years, so it is not very cold, but it helps to offset the heat from the heater
The cigarette lighter works, but we are not and never have been smokers, so the car does not smell of smoke
Leather seats were replaced in 1994, but are starting to show wear
The rear seats are the original vinyl and still look very good
9/09 - new battery and new crank position sensor installed
9/07 - replaced the water pump
4/06 - replaced the spark plug and ignition wires, replaced the heater by-pass hose and had a tune-up
10/09 - successfully passed the smog check and I have ordered new plates, since I transferred its original vanity plates to one of my other vehicles
Need attention:
Antenna lifter does not work
The paint is starting to chip in a few areas
The side mirror adjuster motors are not working
Cruise control not working
The sunroof lifter does not open (likely a bad rocker switch)
The windshield washer does not work, as pump is shot and the hoses were chewed through by mice
The rear window defogger wire came loose from the window grid, so I do not know if it would work or not
The front windshield has a two foot long horizontal crack
The heater unit is stuck on hot, and this seems to be a mechanical issue, not an electrical one - Our mechanic says the heater control panel is bad
The front hood lifters and rear hatch lifters are all shot
The car was stolen in a car-jacking in 1990, but I got it back within an hour (long story). Ever since then, when the transmission is hot, it grinds if you rush it into second gear. It appears to be a synchro issue. For the past 19 years, I have been shifting from first to third without really thinking about it. All other gears are smooth and strong. Even second works well if you time it right and ease it in.
