Dave's 1988 Porsche 944
I've recently obtained a 1988 944 Lux in Guards Red. I came to own the car about three months ago after going to a funeral, meeting a cousin I'd not seen for years. A conversation in the pub after the funeral revealed that the car had been stood on a canal boat dockyard for 12 months due to financial difficulties. I went to look at the car the following weekend where I found that the car started from a jump starter. It grumbled a bit, but settled down nicely after a couple of seconds and idled sweet. The paint however was nearly white with oxidisation. I bought the car off him there and then. Pics of my first views of the car are included here. I got her home and set about sorting the paint work out, this I did but only after five days of hard work but as you will see it was worth it. I'd like to say at this time the body work was excellent no rust anywhere. In fact the only things that suffered were the brake linings and fuel pipes which i replaced with Goodrich made to order replacements which are expensive (for any one thinking of it) but worth it, don't have to worry about them again. Then i had full belt and tensioners and pulleys replaced and all other belts were renewed. New "rotor" type drilled and grooved discs all round with EBC Greenstuff pads and OEM rear brake shoes. Brake calipers refurbished and painted (red of course). Interior cleaned up sweet, very very nice, couldn't believe it was 19 years old. This car has had 4 owners and they all looked after it except my cousin who nearly ruined it. My mechanic says the engine is sweet considering it's done 117,000 miles, only 8,000 of which in the last 5 years. Under the bonnet was cleaned and came up a treat, I've only replaced the oil filter with a mahle replacement, oil the air filter (standard air box with K&N filter), new platinum twin-tipped plugs from NGK. It has a stainless exhaust straight through from Dansk i think, it sounds awesome anyways. Only problems up to now are drivers window doesn't work (passenger side works fine), have replaced the whole unit for a unit obtained off eBay from a 1993 968 RHD. Heater problems i.e. hot air only through blower, being sorted as I speak. And I think due to emptying the fuel tank due to corroded fuel lines, had an idle and low speed smoothness problem. I've booked her into the local Bentley garage for a diagnostic so should soon have that sorted, probably should of replaced fuel filter as well, hope thats the problem. It's got the usual original clutch problem i think, clunks a bit sometimes, but if it needs it it will get a new one pronto, bought a used but excellent replacement torque tube in case. It passed MOT first visit. It's taken me three months of hard work and loads a dosh to get it this far but I LOVE THIS CAR! It's an absalute joy to drive, I've clocked up 1,500 miles in the first week of having it on the road which included a weekend trip to the west highlands of Scotland where it was awesome. All in all, I personally think this is the best car I've owned and I've had a few (and still do) including a Mercedes Cosworth 2.5 Evo which it beats hands down, which I thought couldn't happen.
